Beauty takes her father’s place when he must face punishment for his disrespect of the Beast and his property. Beast however soon falls in love with the kind girl, who he asks to marry him night after night. After awhile, Beauty really misses her family and asks if she can visit them and check particularly on her father’s health. Can Beauty be trusted to return?
In this online series, Katrina Messenger will review myths and fairy tales related to the loss of innocence. Children in such tales are forced to undertake journeys that far outstrips their experience levels and exceeds what we would consider an age appropriate expectation.

Written in second century CE, a classic myth hidden within the ribald Latin tale Metamorphoses (aka The Golden Ass ) by Apuleius. The perils of the beautiful Psyche and her rescue and subsequent abandonment at the hands of Eros/Cupid, are followed by the poor girl wandering in search of help and landing in the temple of the offended goddess Aphrodite. We can clearly see remnants of this myth in all the previous stories, but what is the hidden in this tale that the others overlooked?
