Shamanic Arts

Myth, Masks & Magick: A Mask Making Intensive

Mask Making is one of the oldest arts known to humanity. Through masking, we are able to take on other personas and even interact with the spirits. In Africa, maskers perform for initiations, other rites of passage, funerals, and seasonal festivals. Maskers take on the identities of the spirits they perform, becoming something other than human, often acting as diviners, or dispensers of advice and social control, or even as Deity.

In this workshop, we will journey to see which spirits are needed to speak to us. We will then create masks to reflect those spirits, and then share the spirits and their messages in ceremony.

Mask creation is messy business! Either wear something you don’t mind getting creative in, or bring a t-shirt or smock to cover your clothes. We will be using rigid wrap, which is plaster embedded gauze. Bring rubber gloves if you have skin allergies or sensitivities – there is lyme in plaster. If you wear contacts, consider either wearing your glasses, or bring protective goggles.

Ritual Voice and Rhythm

Theatrical arts have their ancient source within ritual forms. The two share many artifacts including pacing, placement and staging. This class will delve into two of the artifacts -- the human voice and underlying power of rhythm -- within ritual. We will review how to warm up, project, and shape our voices. We will review how to use, sustain and modulate rhythms using both drum and voice. But always our intention will be on improving our ritual skills and enhancing our rituals.

This course is co-taught by Katrina Messenger and Tigre Cruz.

Temple of the Underworld

“Sink down, sink down, sink deeper and sink deep,
Into eternal and primordial sleep.
Sink down, forget, be still and draw apart
Into the inner earth’s most secret heart.
Drink of the waters of Persephone,
The secret well beside the sacred tree.
I am that secret queen, Persephone.
All tides are mine, and answer unto me.
Tides of the air, tides of the inner earth,
The secret silent tides of death and birth—
Tides of men’s souls, and dreams, and destiny—
Isis veiled and Rhea, Binah, Ge.” ~ Dion Fortune, Moon Magic

Explore the priestessing skills utilized in Underworld journey rituals. We will be mapping these initiatory landscapes and encountering the Beings that reside there. Ecstatic trance, divine embodiment techniques and tools, transformative and healing spell craft are key components of our work. We work intentionally with our Ancestors of Liberation, those Dead who fought for social justice and built the freedoms we live with today, becoming allies in the work of liberty for the descendants of the future. Participants should bring devotional altar items for work with a specific Dark Goddess of their choice. Please also bring the story of one or more Ancestors of Liberation to share with the group, as well as any pictures or altar offerings to remember their lives.
